Bio
Debora Carl love of outdoor spaces took root while a young girl growing up in Lafayette, a rural town in the San Francisco Bay area. There, she watched her parents transform a 2~acre former walnut orchard into a charming garden.
She graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley in the spring of 1976. During college, Debora spent a year working in Switzerland and traveling, as time permitted, throughout Europe. Eating a raw kohlrabi, a coveted treat, amid art deco architecture on a street corner in Prague and studying art and garden design in Florence enriched her appreciation of the interaction between plants, gardens and people. Her more recent travels have included visits to some of the most well respected gardens of England – Sissinghurst, Hidcote, Great Dixter, and Barnsley House.
Prior to establishing Debora Carl Landscape Design, Debora worked as a chef in a number of successful San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego restaurants. She owned her own small restaurant in Del Mar, California in the late 1970‘s. She spent 11 years as executive chef and three years as a restaurant consultant with TS Restaurants of California and Hawaii, supervising food, menu and table design.
Whether designing visually appealing, sumptuous menus or beautiful gardens, Debora has a keen ability to create results that appeal to the senses. She guides her clients through the design process, ensuring that her designs meet their needs and incorporate the architectural details and exterior colors of the structures adorned by her landscapes. Debora brings together her knowledge of horticulture, design and construction to deliver elegantly styled landscapes.
She continually stretches her concepts by utilizing her own 1~1/2 acre garden as her living laboratory where she experiments with the mixtures of foliage, color and texture of plants appropriate to California‘s Mediterranean climate. Her exquisite attention to detail, sensitivity to scale and content, coupled with a determined commitment to design with her clients in mind, produce elegantly styled, tranquil and harmonious spaces.
